About Us

Expanding Taqwa

We believe that building a strong religious foundation in a traditional setting is extremely important for adults and children alike so as to inculcate positive values and practices that benefit the community and all of humanity. Alhamdulillah, with the approval of the membership and the wider community, the board of directors has initiated the project to expand and refine the internal and external aspects of the masjid’s building structure. The estimated cost for this project is $1,200,000. InshaAllah we hope to complete this project in three phases over a span of three years.

About Masjid-ut-Taqwa & History

Masjid-ut-Taqwa was founded in 1996 by a small community of brothers from Sri Lanka with the only vision and goal to have a masjid in downtown Toronto to provide a place of worship and religious education to all.

Masjid-ut-Taqwa was once an Anglican church, then transformed into a masjid by members of the Guyanese Muslim community, and finally purchased by the Sri Lankan community. At that time, Masjid-ut-Taqwa stood valiantly among a community of non-Muslims; yet as time passed, Muslims congregated to relocate and live near the masjid. Today, there are many Muslims in the locality living peacefully among people of other faiths.

Masjid-ut-Taqwa serves as a center for all Muslims of Sunni devotion, regardless of their culture, creed or nationality. Today, with the grace of Allah we have seen Masjid-ut-Taqwa serve everybody who seeks Taqwa (piety) and who further seeks to reinforce that piety.

Our Imam

Shaykh Muhammad Zakariya ibn Ismail began his journey of seeking traditional knowledge at a very early age. Travelling to DarulUloom al-Arabiyyah al-Islamiyyah in the city of Holcombe, Bury in northern England, he would stay for over a decade beginning his studies with the memorization of the Holy Qur’an, which he completed at a tender age. Upon completing his memorization he began the study of Arabic, jurisprudence and other Islamic sciences comprising the madrassa syllabus. During his final year he completed the six canonical collections of hadith [Sihah al-Sitta] under the tutelage of several masters including Shaykh Yusuf ibn Sulayman Motala (db), Shaykh Islam ul-Haqq and, his uncle, Shaykh Hashim all senior students of the hadith master Shaykh Muhammad Zakariyya al-Kandhlawi rahimahullah.

Shaykh Zakariya grew up in a household of immense piety having had the honour of staying with and serving some of the leading ‘Ulema of the Indian sub-continent. During the course of his studies he also travelled to places throughout the Muslim world and was able to meet many of the foremost scholars from whom he derived great benefit such as his father in-law Shaykh Abdur Rahim ibn Sulayman Motala.

He currently resides in Toronto serving as the Imam of Masjid-ut-Taqwa where he holds lessons in Islamic spirituality as well as weekly gatherings of knowledge.
